Lung Cancer Support Nurse
Meet our Lung Cancer Support Nurse, Claire Mulvihill, who is available to provide telephone support and clinical information to people living with lung cancer, mesothelioma or rarer thoracic cancers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week via our freecall 1800 654 301. Claire also co facilitates our regular lung cancer telephone support groups.
“I see my role as an important addition to the Lung Foundation’s Information and Support Centre. I will be available to support lung cancer patients and their families who require clinical support or have a clinical question regarding their diagnosis, treatment and care. I will use Lung Foundation Australia resources and provide clinical information and, when needed link patients with the care they need within their local community”, Claire said. “Patients and their families often have questions or concerns after seeing their medical specialist and I’ll be able to answer clinical questions and hopefully reduce any concern or anxiety they are feeling”, she said.
Prior to taking up her role here at the Lung Foundation, Claire worked as a Lung Cancer Nurse Coordinator at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide where she assisted in establishing the rapid access lung cancer clinic, an initiative of one of the respiratory consultants. The clinic provided a system for GPs to notify our hospital of an unconfirmed lung cancer that required quick action. This role involved meeting patients with suspected lung cancer and guiding them through their diagnostic tests, following up once diagnosed, and helping the patient understand the multidisciplinary team’s (MDT) proposed treatment plan.
Claire’s position is made possible through a successful application under the 2015 Supporting People with Cancer Grant, funded by Cancer Australia.
